FFG Star Wars: The Card Game

Star Wars: The Card Game

What now, FFG - am I to re-mortgage my house??

Daring Rebel spies have uncovered a weak point in the Galactic Empire's defenses. Tensions run high as the Rebels assemble a strike team with one chance to set back the Empire's quest for total galactic domination, but with zero margin for error! Coordinating hit-and-run attacks to distract the Imperials, the Rebel Alliance relies upon a handful of heroes to undertake a vital mission…
Star Wars: The Card Game is a cooperative LCG that puts 1-4 players* in command of the Rebel strike force and mission team. Players will launch fleets of starships and direct some of the most famous heroes in the Star Wars galaxy as they confront the might of the Empire. By working together, players can fend off Imperial assaults and complete their mission, winning the game! In Star Wars: The Card Game, players take the roles of such notable heroes as Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Princess Leia as an Imperial deck opposes their mission attempts with a devious artificial intelligence. With a wealth of characters, starships, missions, and enemies, Star Wars: The Card Game immerses players in galactic conflict.

Looks like they're learning from their mistakes with the LOTR: LCG too...

" Players can create two standard tournament decks with the contents of a single core set"

And here are a couple of Ship cards taken from a still of the FFG promo video:

  1. Well I'm very mixed on this news, though overall I think its good.

FF having the license rather than Hasboro and Doctor Van Ness the luckfest master is great, Hasboro has not done one good thing with the license, Queens Gambit was close, but no cigar.

OTOH - This already sounds WAYYYY to similiar to LOTR-TCG and takes on the same format and has the same design team. Why not at the very least put just a tiny bit more effort in it and like you offer a competitive option as well as a co-operative option one? No excuse really, LOTR should of had rules for someone to play the baddies, sure we could make them ourselves...

I know its probably too early to tell for sure but these are my initial thoughts and impressions. Even if it turns out close to the same (too much I might be able to muster the will to pass for sure) it will be quite hard to resist the wallet drain since I'm a big fan of the theme, and likely many will be in that same boat. I hope they do TRY to bring something new to it, a great opportunity for sure.

The X-Wing game also sounds interesting, though likely another cow getting hooked up to the milking machine with a "starter" set and likely many boosters to follow. Can't blame them for trying to cash in, it would just be nice if they spent an ample amount of time developing and playtesting their games and trying to come up with some new concepts once in awhile instead of just focusing on pumping them out as fast as possible for more $$$.

    Cheers

  2. Good points, Jay - mixed thoughts indeed. I do enjoy LOTR: LCG but it has its faults, and I hope they learn from them and improve with this one. Also, it really needs to be different enough from LOTR to be worth it rather than a re-theme of the same game, which it’s definitely at risk of becoming. Also the baddies in SW would be more exciting to play as they have a wider range of cool characters to pick from (Boba Fett, Vader, Maul, et al).

If I had to choose between LOTR and SW it would be an incredibly tough call indeed. Plus I’m already invested in LOTR now!

I can probably manage to avoid give the X Wing game a miss though. I’ve got the old Star Wars: Star Warriors board game if I ever need to indulge in blasting Tie Fighters...
