Adrien de la Rivière, a French cavalry knight, was captured in Malta after his horse was shot from under him in a disastrous early skirmish with the Ottomans. He fed Mustafa Pasha false information about the Maltese defences, which resulted in a failed attack by the Ottomans. His deception cost him his life - he was horribly tortured to death in front of the other slaves and captives to teach them a lesson.
