Fantasy Quest: Keywords, Symbols and Actions

Here is the latest page from the painstakingly slow-coming Fantasy Quest high resolution rules book:

Please let me know if you see any errors/typos/etc.  I'm thinking this could be the back page, a 'summary' of sorts.

And here's the Contents page:

Branching Paths at LCGPARIS 2012

Big shout out to Michael Hatik and all the French LOTR: LCG gamers at LCGPARIS 2012 who, whilst also play-testing FFG's new scenario Foundations of Stone, also played through my own Branching Paths scenario.  More info including photos of the event can be found here:

Looks like a great time was had by all!  :)

Fantasy Quest Version Update

Hello Fantasy Questererers!

Sorry about the lack of info/activity on this blog.  I've been beavering away implementing all the feedback from play-testers and from the UK Games Expo and basically the whole of Fantasy Quest has received an overhaul.  The core game play is still the same but I've revamped ALL the FQ cards and I think it's looking really good.  Here are just some of the changes I’ve already made:

1.         Sagas are now in cool, bite-sized Chapters
2.         All card numbers are larger/readable
3.         There are now Location short cuts between certain Locations where the Ancients like to hang out
4.         Locations in Gloom are now Black and white for visual clarity
5.         Encounters now include ‘balancing the leaders’ events which target either the Strongest or Weakest player
6.         A new Basic Game rule for noobs: draw 2 cards and choose which to encounter – if it’s an Enemy you must encounter it, if it’s two Enemies you must choose the higher VP value Enemy to encounter
7.         The rules have been revamped once again, including a nice turn order breakdown (BGG won’t accept it so I’ll post it on my blog soon)
8.         Search Action: you may now Encounter the same empty Location by spending one Action so you don’t have to move away and then come back if you’re searching for that elusive Keyword
9.         Fate points are now automatic successes instead of extra rolls to help get the early game moving
10.        Actions are now closer to simultaneous – players take it in turns to play individual Actions rather than taking their entire turn at once.  This was a crucial change imho – it reduces downtime, increases the race element in competitive play, and allows more tactical options for cooperative team players
11.        The iconography has been updated so it’s easy to see which cards give which rewards, and all decks have their icons on the backs for consistency and ease of use
12.        Another Basic Game rule for noobs: successes only require 4,5 or 6 instead of just 5 or 6
13.        And most importantly the Study Icon is now a ‘spell book’, instead of ‘joined hands’ which numerous play-testers thought was an alien willy...

Okay that’s a good number to stick with for now.  It’s still currently a monster of a game, with over 300 cards, tons of variety and replayability, and a great narrative structure which I think rivals all the fantasy games I’ve played.  To print it is going to kill another cartridge or two, or I suppose I could just put another seven deck order in on artscow!  And given that info - if anyone else is interested in play-testing this latest iteration of the FQ behemoth before I try and drag it down the publishing/kick-startering route, email or geekmail me and I’ll add you to the list of potential play-testers (unless I get over-subscribed again).

Here are some teasers to be going on with in the meantime:

Some peeps accused me of being camera shy so I thought I'd better come out of the closet...

Wondering how it will go at the Expo tomorrow:

This amazing Fantasy Quest T-shirt could be yours!

All you have to do is ask me "Where did you get those cool T shirts?" at the UK Games Expo!

See, the only thing I own right now is the name, so that's why you get the incredibly stark, instantly recognisable - 'artless' you might say - branding.

Game/wine/table/etc not included...

We only have one spare, so make sure you act fast.  :)

Fantasy Quest Angry Strangers!

If you piss off enough people in Gloom of Kilforth: the Fantasy Quest Game, experience has proven that it can sometimes be hard to keep track of who is still mad at you!  So you can use these helpful tokens to keep track of your personal grudges.  Each player takes a couple of 'Angry Stranger' tokens of the same colour at the start of the game.  If negotiations with a Stranger don't go so well (i.e. you get zero successes - it happens) simply pop a token onto the irate Stranger to show that he is now your Enemy.  Remember to keep a token for yourself to remind you which colour is yours.  You now know to avoid this Stranger(/s) at all costs, unless you are suitably armed of course...

Brand, Son Of Ugly

We've been having problems looking at the ugliest character ever depicted in a card game:

So I came up with a solution:

Lost in The Long Dark

From the FFG article here:

The passage twisted round a few turns, and then began to descend… In the pale ray of the wizard’s staff, Frodo caught glimpses of stairs and arches, and of other passages and tunnels, sloping up, or running steeply down, or opening blankly dark on either side. It was bewildering beyond hope of remembering.
–The Fellowship of the Ring, “A Journey in the Dark”
After surviving a desperate struggle with The Watcher in the Water, the heroes of Middle-earth pass at last through the Doors of Durin and into the ancient mines of Moria. Within those tunnels, your heroes must conduct their search for the source of the increased Orc activity within the Misty Mountains. But as they journey into The Long Dark of those ominous mines, your heroes press ever deeper into a network of tunnels that carves through rock for leagues and leagues.
In the fourth Adventure Pack of the Dwarrowdelf cycle, the ominous dark hangs heavier and closer around your heroes, and the going is slow. The Long Dark is choked with hazards and foes, and heroes must be careful to keep their way. Should they falter, they may find themselves stumbling into disaster…
Finding Your Way
The Long Dark introduces a new, scenario-specific mechanic known as a Locate Test. As your heroes navigate the massive subterranean realm of Moria, the Locate Test challenges their senses of direction. Will they head true? Or will they wander blindly through ancient and abandoned passageways, losing their way for days as their food supplies dwindle or stumbling at last into a goblin encampment?
When a Locate Test is triggered, the first player discards one card from his hand to discard the top card of the encounter deck. Some of the encounter cards in The Long Dark have a bold PASS printed in the lower-right corner. If the first player discards such a card from the encounter deck, then he succeeds at the Locate Test, the heroes regain their sense of direction, and they may continue deeper into the mines. If the encounter card does not have the boldPASS printed on it, the first player may continue to attempt the test, discarding cards from his hand to discard cards from the top of the encounter deck until he either has no more cards available to discard or chooses to stop attempting the test.
Fellowships that do not PASS their Locate Tests, however, may find their situations growing more and more dire. Many of the cards in the scenario have Lost effects on them that may trigger whenever your heroes lose their way. The more of these effects you accumulate in the staging area, the deadlier they become. At the heart of The Long Dark of Moria, fellowships that get lost may find themselves starved, exhausted, and surrounded by hostile Goblins.
The Long Dark is making its way to a retailer near you. Next week, as we continue moving in the right direction, we’ll take a look at a couple of the reasons the Dwarves do not fear the dark!
