Gloom of Kilforth: A Fantasy Quest Game - Final call for play-testers

Hi guys,

I'm drawing close to the final version of the game and after speaking with Indie we are now looking for some brave volunteers for this last round of play-testing. A few of you have already been in contact, but if there are others out there who want to put this game through its paces and help make it even more awesomer for its release please register your interest below.

We will need feedback on the game so please only reply if you feel able to provide some. For those who already have play-test copies who would like to continue to be involved just let me know and I'll update you on the new stuff you'll need once it's ready.

Thanks for your continuing interest in the game!  cool

We're interested in player counts of 2-4 (cooperative or competitive) at this stage, since single hero play has already been tested exhaustively. If you can handle this as a solo player you're most welcome!

Fantasy Quest: Keywords, Symbols and Actions

Here is the latest page from the painstakingly slow-coming Fantasy Quest high resolution rules book:

Please let me know if you see any errors/typos/etc.  I'm thinking this could be the back page, a 'summary' of sorts.

And here's the Contents page:

Fantasy Quest Version Update

Hello Fantasy Questererers!

Sorry about the lack of info/activity on this blog.  I've been beavering away implementing all the feedback from play-testers and from the UK Games Expo and basically the whole of Fantasy Quest has received an overhaul.  The core game play is still the same but I've revamped ALL the FQ cards and I think it's looking really good.  Here are just some of the changes I’ve already made:

1.         Sagas are now in cool, bite-sized Chapters
2.         All card numbers are larger/readable
3.         There are now Location short cuts between certain Locations where the Ancients like to hang out
4.         Locations in Gloom are now Black and white for visual clarity
5.         Encounters now include ‘balancing the leaders’ events which target either the Strongest or Weakest player
6.         A new Basic Game rule for noobs: draw 2 cards and choose which to encounter – if it’s an Enemy you must encounter it, if it’s two Enemies you must choose the higher VP value Enemy to encounter
7.         The rules have been revamped once again, including a nice turn order breakdown (BGG won’t accept it so I’ll post it on my blog soon)
8.         Search Action: you may now Encounter the same empty Location by spending one Action so you don’t have to move away and then come back if you’re searching for that elusive Keyword
9.         Fate points are now automatic successes instead of extra rolls to help get the early game moving
10.        Actions are now closer to simultaneous – players take it in turns to play individual Actions rather than taking their entire turn at once.  This was a crucial change imho – it reduces downtime, increases the race element in competitive play, and allows more tactical options for cooperative team players
11.        The iconography has been updated so it’s easy to see which cards give which rewards, and all decks have their icons on the backs for consistency and ease of use
12.        Another Basic Game rule for noobs: successes only require 4,5 or 6 instead of just 5 or 6
13.        And most importantly the Study Icon is now a ‘spell book’, instead of ‘joined hands’ which numerous play-testers thought was an alien willy...

Okay that’s a good number to stick with for now.  It’s still currently a monster of a game, with over 300 cards, tons of variety and replayability, and a great narrative structure which I think rivals all the fantasy games I’ve played.  To print it is going to kill another cartridge or two, or I suppose I could just put another seven deck order in on artscow!  And given that info - if anyone else is interested in play-testing this latest iteration of the FQ behemoth before I try and drag it down the publishing/kick-startering route, email or geekmail me and I’ll add you to the list of potential play-testers (unless I get over-subscribed again).

Here are some teasers to be going on with in the meantime:

‘GLOOM OF KILFORTH: A FANTASY QUEST GAME’ - RULES VERSION 2.0

Finally they're here!  Nearly missed my own deadline too...

Please check for errors, grammar, and any other uncertainties and ask away here if you have any questions.  I've incorporated feedback from everyone who got back to me about the beta testing and have tried to cover everything that came up in the Living FAQ thread on this very site.

So thanks for all your help in getting the game this far and here’s to moving on to the next stage, with a sneak preview of the new Saga layouts below.  Here is the doc version of the rules:

Once it's all confirmed and checked over I'll transfer it to the full colour pdf and get that uploaded too.

Embeditin seems to have messed with the Word layout somewhat but hopefully it's all still legible...

Fantasy Quest at UK Games Expo 2012

Hello Readers!

Just a little note to let you know that Mmzomba (Sam) and myself (Tristan by the way, nice to meet you) are booked in for Saturday and Sunday at the UK Games Expo 2012 and I’ve applied for a demo table on the Saturday too. Not sure if they have any left at this stage but if not I’m sure we can find a table or something somewhere. Otherwise it’s just going to be beers and browsing! So if anyone is going to be about it would be great to see you and maybe catch a game of Fantasy Quest too.  :)

Watch this space for the rules version 2.0 which will hopefully be released this week, along with the newly upgraded Saga cards...

Fantasy Quest Official Sound Track - songs now available!

Philip Glass' Dracula was a huge influence on us and I love the elegance and simplicity of a purely piano score.  We listened to a lot of music whilst developing and play-testing Fantasy Quest and I really liked the idea of a sound track that tied directly into the story of the game because great music enhances literally everything.  With that in mind I asked Francesca if she would compose a theme that tied into the game and she went a gigantic step further and put together an entire album of brilliant piano music.

Whilst this won’t be included with the game itself it will be made available as an optional extra for those who want the full ‘Gloom of Kilforth’ experience.

And you can now download the first four tracks from Francesca's home page under "Singles" here:

http://www.songstall.com/francescalhall

For the princely sum of 40p each!

The following track ‘Final Battle’ is one of my personal favourites, dramatic and exciting, and it’s here for your listening pleasure:

Enjoy!

Fantasy Quest Official Sound Track

The brilliant composer Francesca L Hall has produced two more tracks for the awesome Fantasy Quest sound track, nothing gets me more excited about this game's development:

The Veil:

Knighthood:

Though these tracks will not be included with the game the CD will be made available for those who wish to enjoy the full experience of the game!

Fantasy Quest Saga Tracker

Fantasy Quest Saga Tracker

This is an example Saga Tracker design for Fantasy Quest, this particular example is for the Assassinate Leader Saga.  The COMPLETE marker is a separate token placed over each element as it is completed.  For cooperative group quests every hero would have to complete that element at the same time, at the location designated by the saga to place the COMPLETE marker.

This would potentially help to track the progress of individual players' Sagas more easily, and help to flesh out group Sagas.

Fantasy Quest Official Sound Track!

You all have your own music and sound tracks you enjoy listening to whilst playing your favourite thematic games, whether it's 1920s jazz whilst playing Arkham Horror, the Howard Shore scores whilst playing the LOTR: LCG, or maybe even some heavy industrial rock as you roll out Doom:TBG.

Well for your listening pleasure, the hugely talented composer - Francesca L Hall - has embarked upon her own Musical Quest to develop a series of exhilarating, lamenting, and stirring piano pieces especially designed and inspired by the themes and settings in the world of Fantasy Quest to accompany the game.

Enjoy!

Fantasy Quest - Saga Tracker Sheet

First pass at basic playmat for Saga tracking.  Cards in hand would go face down.  Useful for solo play.  Competitive play would show you how far along your opponent is, which may be a good thing or a bad thing...

Fantasy Quest Session Report: Some days EVERYTHING goes your way

An excellent narrative Fantasy Quest session report by BGGer Toc13 (Chris Stanton):

Setting off from the stinking, filth-ridden cesspit of corruption that is Sprawl City, I immediately move off the beaten track. I figure the fewer people see me, the better. Making my way through the old wood, I decide to give the consecrated altar I saw a wide berth- Not really my scene. Crossing a clearing in the forest, I spot a witch in the distance. Knowing them to be quite nasty when annoyed, I stayed out of sight only relaxing once she had gone. Night was closing in & the weather was turning chilly so I set up camp beside a spring that was reputed to have healing powers- a bit of insurance if anything happened. I had no sooner done this when the skies opened & hail came pelting down...but I was safe & warm...

Fantasy Quest Solo game: DEMON WIZARD "Live to tell..."

Brilliant session report from BGG user Lestat Lioncourt:

"Solo game: DEMON WIZARD "Live to tell...""

Being the youngest ARCANE DEMON sucked. There was no way he could compete with any other DEMON of their CLASS. Most of them were done with their training and spend parts of their free time using SPELLS on him which he struggled to fend off. He was quite good with his dagger, but the older DEMONS rarely bothered to teach or train him.
Early on he discovered that CHARM got you much further at times than physical strength. Worked especially great on a drunken DEMON.
